Book Review- Impossible

(From Goodreads) Lucy Scarborough is only 17, but she carries the burden of a curse that has already struck down several women in her family. Each of her afflicted ancestors failed at completing three seemingly impossible tasks, and each succumbed to madness at the birth of her first child. Facing this tragic fate, Lucy braces herself for a losing battle. Mercifully, she has allies in her struggle: intensely sympathetic foster parents and her loyal childhood friend Zach.

I picked it up in the library and decided it sounded interesting. I didn't realize what was really going on until I started reading it. The turning point of the book is when Lucy gets raped on prom night and pregnant. Those topics bother me some, but I decided that the book was worth reading anyways. And it was worth it.

Anyways, we find out her date was possessed by this evil elf dude who's been in her family's history for generations. Each of the women in her family become pregnant somehow before their eighteenth birthday and if they can't break the curse before their child is born, they become mad women.

I loved the characters. I thought the parts where the characters reacted with Lucy's mom was real enough. Considering that she was crazy. And they were all so real although at times they seemed to take everything too easily. Lucy's adoptive parents took the news as if it wasn't something totally serious. And when Zach suggests he marries Lucy for several reasons, everyone seems fine with it although his parents are slightly disappointed.

Another thing that bothered me was that while the book mainly focuses on how Lucy will break the curse and later on care for the baby, the book doesn't mention much how being pregent affects her. Especially with her life at school. Sure her friends were supportive, but how did other people react to the news that Lucy was raped, is carrying the man's child, and that her date killed himself? Did it affect her schoolwork at all when she was laid up? What about getting married while not even finishing high school yet? That's got to be slightly awkward for people at school.

But other than that, the plot was well thought out. I loved how they had to do all this research and they weren't even sure it would work until the very end. You could totally tell who was the bad guy and the whole time I kept yelling at the characters to resist his charm and see who he really was, even though they eventually figured it out at the end.

I give this book four out of five stars. So have you ever read a book where the topic dealed with something you weren't sure about? If it was something serious, like rape, did you think the characters were acting real enough about it?

Sincerely,
Sareh

  1. I read this book a few years ago, and I enjoyed it. I was a bit strange, but I think that's what made it interesting. Thinking back, there were parts about it I liked and then others that I didn't. I think your review sums it up! I liked reading what you thought :)

  2. I agree! I also liked how the author took a song or poem and made it (I think its an actual song but I'm not sure) in a story. Thanks! :) I'm glad you enjoyed it.
