Poetry- Epigrams

Today we will be learning about about epigrams. For those who don't know what type of poems this is, here is an example.

What is an Epigram By Samuel Taylor Coleridge
What is an epigram? a dwarfish whole,
Its body brevity, and wit its soul

Well that probably didn't really explain what an epigram is, but I liked it. Anyways, an epigram is a poem with two rhyming lines that are humorous. So yes, it helps if you are somewhat witty or you believe yourself to be (like I think I am funny at times). It also means this is the perfect time (or poem) to break out your rhyming skills. Or if you're not very good with rhyming you can also go to RhymeZone if you have to.

Epigram Engraved On the Collar of a Dog Which I Gave To His Royal Highness By Alexander Pope
I am his Highness' dog at Kew;
Pray tell me, sir, whose dog are you?

I don't know about you, but I find that Mr. Pope's title for this poem is extremely long.

Epitaph for Someone or Other By James Vincent Cunningham
Naked I come, naked I leave the scene,
And naked was my pastime in between.

Yeah....I'm not really sure about that one....

So, have you ever written an epigram? If you have would you share it with us?

Sincerely,
Peony

The Bird who forgot that he had to sing an epigram.
I'd Tweet all day till the sun goes down
But I forget how to make that one sound

  2. Yeah I think that's right! :) We had to write some for my American Lit. class last year and that's probably better than what I did.

I'll go see if I can find it...*opens documents*

  3. Rhyming is not really difficult if anyone actually dedicated.
